A Record-Breaking Year for Turku Market Hall – Nearly One Million Visits
Turku Market Hall has had an exceptionally strong year. The total number of visitors for the year is estimated to rise close to one million.
Visitor numbers have remained high throughout the year, with the busiest days attracting more than 5,000 visitors. December has been particularly lively, and the number of visitors for the month is expected to exceed 100,000.
Especially in connection with events and public holidays, the Market Hall has served as a vibrant meeting place for both local residents and tourists. Throughout the year, events and themed days have been organized at the Market Hall, highlighting its diverse and international atmosphere. A rich food culture and strong local identity meet in the hall in a way that reflects today’s city and its lively everyday life.
The Market Hall Turns 130 Years Old
The coming year will be a special one for the Market Hall. It will be the last full year of operation in the current premises before a major renovation. The year is also historically significant: next year, the Market Hall will celebrate its 130th anniversary. The anniversary year coincides in a unique way with the hall’s final year of operation in its current premises before renovation.
“For 130 years, the Market Hall has been part of the everyday life, celebrations, and food culture of city residents. It is wonderful to see that the hall is currently experiencing such a strong and vibrant period. This year provides an excellent foundation for the upcoming anniversary year,” says Hanna Sjöbring, Commercial Manager of the City of Turku.
As the turn of the year approaches, attention is already shifting to the future: the Market Hall will continue its active operations in 2026 and prepare for the next phase of its history.
“There is still a full year ahead in the familiar Market Hall, which is already in great need of a thorough renovation. Let’s make the coming year a good and meaningful one together,” encourages Johan Hellsten, Chair of the Turku Market Hall Association.
“After that, we can prepare for the move and focus on ensuring that the new temporary Market Hall will be functional and pleasant for everyone,” Hellsten adds.
